Can't open your DAV file? Here's how to fix it

Modified on Thu, Jul 3 at 11:02 AM

If you're having trouble opening a video file with the .dav extension after backing up footage from your Lorex recorder, here's how to fix the issue and avoid it in the future.

Why are DAV files used by default?

By default, Lorex recorders save backed-up footage in the .dav format. This format is specifically designed for Lorex systems and includes built-in encryption for security, helping to protect your footage from unauthorized access or tampering. This makes it an ideal default for sensitive surveillance data.

However, since .dav is a proprietary format, it may not open with standard media players like VLC or WIndows Media Player, which brings us to the solution.

Option 1: Use the Included Lorex Player

There's no need to convert your DAV files to watch them. Whenever you back up video footage from your recorder in .dav format, the Lorex Player is automatically included in the same backup folder, this means:

  • You don't need to download a separate player.
  • You can play .dav files immediately using the included software.

To play your DAV file:

  1. Open the folder where you saved your backup.
  2. Look for the Lorex Player application file.
  3. Double-click to open the Lorex Player.
  4. Open your .dav file within the Lorex Player to begin viewing.

Option 2: Choose a Different Format Next Time (AVI or MP4)

If you prefer to use your own media player, such as VLC, Windows Media Player, or QuickTime, you can change the file format during backup.

When the backup window opens on your Lorex recorder, you’ll have the option to choose the file format.

By default, .dav is selected, but you can switch to a more universally compatible format.

To save in AVI or MP4 format:

  1. Insert your USB flash drive.
  2. When the backup window appears, select .avi or .mp4 instead of .dav.

  3. Click Backup to continue.

These formats are compatible with most standard video players, making playback simple and flexible.
